HEALTH ADVISORIES

A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (“U “shape) is allowing moisture in the form of clouds from frontal systems to move over the Pacific Northwest. The graphics for days 1-3 show a frontal system headed our way by late today. The graphics for days 3-7 show more complex frontal activity moving our way Thursday through next Monday returning the chances of rain and snow.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Mostly cloudy with a slight (20%) chance of AM showers, a good (50%) chance of rain and a bit cooler this afternoon (President’s Day), rain tonight (under 0.10 in. of rain possible),
  • Mostly cloudy and a bit cooler with rain Tuesday (0.25 in. of rain possible), evening rain with a (40%) chance of snow,  freezing rain with rain likely (70%) with rain likely (70%) at night (0.10 in. of rain possible, snow level 500 ft.),
