HEALTH ADVISORIES

A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (“U “shape) is allowing moisture in the form of clouds from frontal systems to move over the Pacific Northwest. The graphics for days 1-3 show the frontal system that pushed through Oregon Tuesday and the next one, a backdoor cold front that will drop temperatures even lower. The graphics for days 3-7 show more complex frontal activity moving our way Saturday through next Wednesday keeping us wet.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Mostly cloudy with rain and snow showers and a bit cooler today (0.25 in. of rain possible, 1 in. of snow possible, snow level 500 ft.), evening showers likely (70%), a good (50%) chance of snow showers late tonight (0.10 in. of rain possible, 1 in. of snow possible),
