At 4:28 p.m. on May 29, Eugene Police officers responded to a dispute at a residence on Jackson Street. After arriving, they found there was probable cause to arrest a resident, Zachariah Christopher Matte, age 34, for Menacing APA (abuse prevention act), and Interfering with Making a Report. However, Matte barricaded himself in the attic and advised police the situation would end with ‘suicide by cop.’

In addition to Patrol, there was response by EPD Crisis Negotiation Team, EPD SWAT, Metro Drone Team, EPD/LCSO K9 Team, and Eugene Springfield Fire. After almost four hours of negotiation, Matte came out and was safely taken into custody without the use of force and no reported property damage by the responders. He was transported to Lane County Jail and lodged on the probable cause charges.

Eugene Police Foundation funds allowed EPD to secure lodging for the victim and two dogs. EPD and LCSO received thanks for their compassion, support, and restraint. Case 24-07696
