On January 12th, 2024, Springfield Police Department Dispatch received a call that a passerby observed a woman administering CPR to an incapacitated man on Main Street near the Springfield Bus Station. The woman was nearby when she observed the man walking and then fall over. An Oregon State Police trooper in the area stopped to relieve the woman and continued to administer CPR as the victim was still unresponsive.

Hearing the call, a Springfield Animal Control Officer responded to the scene to assist. The ACO retrieved the automated external defibrillator from his vehicle and prepared the device to administer a shock to the man. The AED deployment was successful, and the man was breathing when he was transported to an area hospital by paramedics. The man has since undergone open heart surgery, has been discharged from the hospital, and is expected to fully recover.
