In the early morning hours of October 27, a resident of The Tiffany Building, 795 Willamette Street, was reported to have pulled a fire alarm. Eugene Springfield Fire responded along with a building maintenance staff member. There was no fire, so ESF left the location.

At approximately 4 a.m. the same day, Eugene Police officers were dispatched to the building as the resident, identified as Dane Patrick Mentzer, age 39, was reported to have yelled at the maintenance employee, yelling about a fire through hole smashed in his apartment door. He was wearing a costume with horns and screaming, and he is reported to have run at the employee while wielding a framing hammer in one hand and what the victim perceived at the time to be a machete in the other. The maintenance worker ran down four flights of stairs and called 9-1-1. Mentzer then came out the front door and smashed the electronic call/access box for tenants.

Eugene Police officers arrived and pursued Mentzer up and down stairs, while Mentzer activated fire alarms. Some officers were able to intercept Mentzer and get him to drop his implements. He was taken into custody without incident. Mentzer was found to be in possession of a collapsible baton and a hammer. He was transported to Lane County Jail was and lodged on charges of Menacing, Unlawful Use of Weapon, two counts of Disorderly Conduct, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. Case 23-16238
