Fatal Crash US-101- Tillamook County11/11/22

On November 9, 2022, at approximately 12:01PM, the Oregon State Police responded to a two vehicle collision on US-101, near MP 50.

The preliminary investigation indicated a fully loaded Peterbilt tanker truck, operated by Kenneth Walter Zwald (69) of Tillamook, was northbound on US 101, when for an unknown reason, it crossed into the opposing lane and struck a Mazda CX-5, operated by Gordon Stewart Beadle (81) of Campbell River (BC), head-on in the southbound lane.  Both vehicle operators were transported for injuries.  A passenger in the Mazda, Judy Gwyneth Beadle (79) of Campbell River (BC), was killed during the collision.  

OSP was assisted by the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Department and ODOT.

Fatal Crash HWY 26- Clatsop County11/11/22

On November 10, 2022, at approximately 7:30PM, the Oregon State Police responded to a vehicle vs pedestrian crash on HWY 26, near MP 1.5.

The preliminary investigation indicated a westbound Toyota Camry, operated by Robert Greenawald (72) of Seaside, struck a pedestrian, Timothy L. Painter (65) of Seaside, who was walking within the westbound lane of HWY-26, near MP 1.5.  The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The operator of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

OSP was assisted by the Cannon Beach Police Department, the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Department, Seaside Fire, Medix, and ODOT.

Fatal Crash Highway 30- Clatsop County11/11/22

On November 10, 2022, at approximately 6:36PM, the Oregon State Police responded to a vehicle vs pedestrian crash on US-30, near MP 82.

The preliminary investigation indicated the pedestrian, Hannah Jean Olson (25) of Astoria, attempted crossing US-30 at the intersection with old US-30, near MP 82.  Olson crossed in front of a white Kia Sorento, operated by Remington Fay Toristoja (28) of Naselle (WA), who was traveling eastbound on US-30.  Olson was struck and killed as she entered the eastbound lane of travel.  The operator of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation. Witnesses to the crash also remained on scene and provided statements.

OSP was assisted by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Department and ODOT.

OSP SW Region DES and JMET serve a search warrant at two locations- Josephine County (Photo)11/07/22

On November 2, 2022, the Oregon State Police Southwest Region Drug Enforcement Section team with assistance from the Josephine County Marijuana Enforcement Team (JMET) of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, executed search warrants at two (2) separate locations in Cave Junction, Josephine County; the 8600 block of Caves Hwy and 3700 block of Holland Loop Rd. 

Located at the Caves Hwy property and seized were approximately 960 pounds of illegal, processed marijuana, seven firearms, approximately eight pounds of illegal THC extracts, and one cargo trailer. Additionally, evidence of illegal marijuana exportation from Oregon was discovered on-scene.

James Rossi (30) was arrested and subsequently lodged in the Josephine County jail on the charges of 475C.337 Possession of Marijuana-Persons>=21-Over 8 lbs. usable (Fel C) and 475C.349 Manufacture of Marijuana-Over 12 Plants. 

Located and seized at the Holland Loop road property were a firearm, 916 illegal marijuana plants, and approximately 2,000 pounds of dried, processed illegal marijuana products in the form of flower buds, concentrates, and extracts.  Five individuals were detained, identified, interviewed, and later released. 

The illegal marijuana seized at both locations was ultimately destroyed. The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available for release.

Fatal Crash Highway 26- Washington County11/05/22

On Friday, November 4, 2022, at approximately 3:40 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 26 near milepost 53.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Honda, Morgan Martin, (34) of Vernonia, was driving eastbound on Highway 26 near milepost 53 when the vehicle left its lane of travel going into oncoming traffic.  The Honda hit a Subaru head-on, operated by Mathew Wales (64) of Banks.  Martin was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Wales was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.  

It is believed that weather and road conditions due to the heavy rainfall were likely factors in this crash.

OSP was assisted on the scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Banks Fire, Washington County DA’s Office, and the Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fatal Crash Highway 30- Clatsop County11/05/22

On Friday, November 4, 2022, at approximately 11:30 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 30 near Milepost 88.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a red Colbalt, operated by Lori M. Wangen (51) of Astoria, was traveling eastbound on Highway 30, when she lost control of the vehicle, went into the oncoming lane, and then stuck a westbound black Equinox operated by Camilo Fonnegra (63) of Chehalis, Washington. Wangen suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  EMS transported Fonnegra and his passenger to an area hospital.   

OSP was assisted on the scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Knappa Fire, Medix, Medix, and the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office.

Oregon State Police Senior Trooper and K-9 partner assist in taking over 83 pounds of suspected cocaine off the street-Linn County (Photo)11/04/22

On November 3, 2022, at approximately 1:01 P.M., an Oregon State Police Senior Trooper from the Salem Area Command stopped a vehicle for following too close, unlawful window tint, and a speed violation on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 228. 

During the traffic stop, the Trooper noticed signs of criminal activity and requested consent to search, which was denied by the occupants of the vehicle.  The Trooper deployed his drug detection K9 and after a positive alert to the odor of controlled substances, the Trooper searched the vehicle. The search of the vehicle revealed approximately 83 pounds of suspected cocaine and a firearm concealed in the vehicle. 

The driver was identified as Adolfo Martinez (28) and the passenger was identified as Carlos Martinez (23) both from Renton, Washington.  Both subjects were taken into custody and lodged in jail pending federal charges. 

OSP Troopers were assisted during the investigation by Detectives from the OSP-Criminal Investigations Division-Drug Enforcement Section (Domestic Highway Enforcement Initiative), Special Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration – Salem Resident Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office – District of Oregon – Portland Office. 

The Oregon State Police-Domestic Highway Enforcement Initiative is supported by the Oregon-Idaho High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).

The Oregon-Idaho HIDTA program is an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) sponsored counterdrug grant program that coordinates with and provides funding resources to multi-agency drug enforcement initiatives, including the OSP-DHE Initiative.

Fatal Crash on US 26- Clackamas County11/04/22

On November 3rd, 2022, at approximately 6:34 AM, OSP responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on US-26 near SE Paha Loop. Preliminary investigation revealed a Nissan Xterra, operated by Brendan Bollock (25) from Welches, was travelling westbound on US-26 when the pedestrian, Eric Echtinaw (63) from Sandy, ran in front of the vehicle and was struck. 

The pedestrian, Echtinaw, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The vehicle operator, Bullock, remained at the scene and was cooperative throughout the investigation. 

The OSP collision reconstruction unit responded to investigate. OSP was assisted by ODOT, Sandy Fire, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

OSP Fish and Wildlife Division is seeking public assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for the unlawful waste of Salmon- Hood River County (Photo)11/04/22

On November 2, 2022, at about 3:45 P.M., a Trooper responded to a call of a large dump site of dead salmon near Exit 51 on I-84 and Wyeth Rd, not far from Cascade Locks, Oregon. The investigation determined the salmon were caught in gill nets. Some salmon were filleted while others were left whole. The dump site was located near a tribal in-lieu fishing site. There were also the remains of two deer with the salmon.

Fatal Crash on Highway 47- Washington County11/04/22

On November 3, 2022, at approximately 11:04 AM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 47 near milepost 87.

Preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle, operated by Leo Vanderzanden (70) of Forest Grove, was driving northbound on Hwy 47 when the vehicle drifted onto the right shoulder of the roadway in a bend in the highway.  The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, hitting the ditch and becoming airborne striking several trees.  The vehicle came to rest on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

Vanderzanden was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical staff.

The highway was closed for over 3 hours. OSP was assisted on scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Forest Grove Police Department, Washington County DA’s Office, Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Forest Grove Fire and Rescue.

Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is seeking public assistance with a Cow (bovine) shot in a field- Douglas County (Photo)11/03/22

On October 31, 2022, at approximately 11:00 P.M., Oregon State Police was notified by a landowner of a cow shot in his field on Boomer Hill Road near Myrtle Creek.  The landowner was called by one of his neighbors who heard a gunshot on October 31, 2022, around 6:00 P.M.   The landowner called OSP after finding the cow in his field down and unable to move.  The cow died several hours later.

OSP Fish and Wildlife Division is seeking public assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for the unlawful killing and waste of a Black Bear- Jackson County (Photo)11/02/22

On October 29, 2022, at about 3:00 P.M., Troopers responded to a call of a dead bear in a tree with an arrow sticking out of it near Anderson Creek Road, not far from Talent, Oregon. The investigation determined that not only was the bear struck by an arrow while in the tree, but it also had two bullet holes. Jackson County Fire District 5 was called to assist with getting the bear out of the tree. 

Evidence collected at the scene indicated human involvement in the death of the bear.  

On October 31, 2022, a second deceased bear in a tree was discovered in the same area. This bear was decomposed, but OSP believes its death was human-caused.

Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Troopers are seeking Public Assistance identifying the person(s) involved in a waste of buck deer — Lane County (Photo)10/31/22

On October 27, 2022, around 4:40 P.M., OSP Fish & Wildlife Troopers learned of a buck deer left to waste along Willow Creek Road, near W 18th Ave. in Eugene, OR.

The deer carcass was discarded into the ditch with only the back-strap, and part of a rear quarter removed. The deer was shot, field dressed, and skinned. The carcass did not display any signs giving reason to be left to waste.

“Waste” means to allow any edible portion of any game mammal (except cougar) or game bird to be rendered unfit for human consumption, or, to fail to retrieve edible portions except internal organs of such game mammals or game birds from the field. Entrails, including the heart and liver, are not considered edible. “Edible portion” of game mammals means 1) the meat of the front quarters as far down as the knees, 2) meat of the hindquarters as far down as the hocks, the meat along the backbone including the 3) loins (back-strap), and 4) tenderloins, for elk it also includes 5) the meat of the neck.

Serious injury Crash on Hwy 20-Linn County10/31/22

On Monday, October 31, 2022 at approximately 5:35 AM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 20 near milepost 40. 

Preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound black Hyundai Kona, operated by Edwin Dominguez (20) of Bend, crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a silver Honda CRV, operated by Tia Miller (26) of Albany. Impairment is being investigated as a possible contributing factor. 

Dominguez was transported to an area hospital via air ambulance with injuries. Miller was also transported via air ambulance with injuries. Two passengers in her vehicle, ages 1 and 4, were transported via ground ambulance with injuries. 

Hwy 20 is traffic is being affected while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigates the scene. OSP urges motorists to check tripcheck.com or call 511 for current roadway alerts. 

OSP was assisted by Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Sweet Home Fire Department/EMS and ODOT. 

Update #2-Officer involved shooting investigation-Officer name released-Josephine County10/28/22

UPDATE #2-Officer name released

The involved officer is identified as Officer Micaila Miguel. Officer Miguel has been employed with the Grants Pass Police Department since 2018. 

UPDATE #1-Name and additional details released

On Monday September 19, 2022 at 7:55 PM, officers from the Grants Pass Police Department responded to a call reporting suspicious activity in progress at a city park. Upon police contact, a male suspect fled the scene on foot and officers canvassed the neighborhood in an attempt to locate him. During the search, one of the officers encountered an armed male resident in the area. During the encounter, the resident was shot by the officer. The resident is identified as Mark Barrett Caldwell (46) of Grants Pass.

Immediate first aid was given to Caldwell and he was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. On September 22, 2022, Caldwell was pronounced deceased at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

Police are still searching for the initial male suspect who fled and are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oregon State Police Dispatch Center at 800-442-0776 or *OSP (*677) from your mobile phone. 

This continues to be an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time.

On Monday, September 19, 2022 at 7:55 PM, officers from the Grants Pass Police Department responded to a call reporting suspicious activity in progress at a city park. 

In response to the call, an officer involved shooting occurred on SW Westholm Avenue in Grants Pass. An adult male was shot by an officer during the incident. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave per Senate Bill 111 protocols. 

The incident is being investigated by the Oregon State Police assisted by the Oregon State Police Forensic Laboratory. The investigation will be referred to the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.

This is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time.

Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Troopers are seeking Public Assistance identifying the person (s) involved in an Elk Poaching- Douglas County (Photo)10/28/22

On October 25, 2022, around 6:30 P.M., OSP Fish & Wildlife Trooper believe two elk were shot within 100 yards of the freeway, near milepost 84, I-5 south, Glendale, OR.

 The two elk, one bull and one cow, were in an open field on the west side of the freeway. The bull was not touched, but the cow was processed with the edible portions taken. This indicates that the subject (s) were in the area for a lengthy amount of time. It is believed the subject (s) used a flashlight in the field between 7:00 P.M October 25 and 7:00 A.M. October 26. There is also a report of a subject driving a silver midsized pickup with a rifle in the area earlier in the day along the freeway.

Oregon State Police Recovers Stolen Property, Firearms, and Bear Carcass while serving Illegal Marijuana Search Warrant- Jackson County (Photo)10/27/22

On Wednesday, October 25, 2022, the Oregon State Police Southwest Region Drug Enforcement Section team, with the assistance of the OSP’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, served a search warrant at a property in the 18000 block of East Evans Creek Road, Rogue River in Jackson County.

 Located and seized during the search were three firearms, approximately 40 illegal marijuana plants, and an estimated 1,000 pounds of illegal, processed marijuana. The illegal marijuana was destroyed. 

 Also recovered at the property were three stolen vehicles, two Utility Terrain Vehicles, and one Toyota pickup. The stolen vehicles were returned to the registered owners. Additionally, a black bear carcass was recovered, and the information was forwarded to OSP’s Fish and Wildlife Division for investigation. 

 Two individuals were detained and arrested. Matthew Connors (46) was lodged in the Jackson County jail on the charge of ORS 475C.349, Unlawful Manufacture of Marijuana. Gerald Fath (36) was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on the charges of ORS 498.00, Unlawful Possession of Game, ORS 475C.349, Unlawful Manufacture of Marijuana, and ORS 166.270, Felon in Possession of a Firearm. 

Two additional individuals were detained, identified, interviewed, and later released. The Department of Human Services was contacted and responded concerning the welfare of the young child found to be residing at the property.

This is an ongoing investigation. No further information is available for release.

Fatal Crash Highway 30- Wasco County10/27/22

On October 26, 2022, at approximately 2:14 P.M., OSP responded to a motorcycle crash on US 30 at milepost 66 near Rowena, Oregon.  The motorcycle, operated by Stefan Lovewell (32) from The Dalles, was traveling eastbound when for an unknown reason, he drifted into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a Sprinter van, operated by Gill Moisan (59) of Quebec, Canada, that was traveling westbound. 

The driver of the van and his passenger were uninjured. Lovewell was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Oregon State Police was assisted by Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 154-Yamhill County10/25/22

On Monday, October 24, 2022 at approximately 8:55 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to single vehicle crash on Hwy 154 at SE Purple Plum Heights Road.

Preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound gray Honda Civic, operated by Luis Roberto Esquivel (31) of Salem, crossed over the oncoming lane and rolled down the embankment. Speed and impairment are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash.

Esquivel sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. 

Hwy 154 was affected for approximately 2.5 hours.

OSP was assisted by Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office and Dayton Fire Department. 

Fatal Crash on Interstate 5-Douglas County10/25/22

On Saturday, October 22, 2022 at approximately 12:41 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 148.

Preliminary investigation revealed a northbound white Toyota Camry, operated by David Feaver (77) of Modesto, California, lost control on the wet roadway. The Camry struck the embankment and rolled onto its roof. 

Feaver was transported by ambulance with critical injuries and later pronounced deceased. 

OSP was assisted by North Douglas Fire Department and ODOT.

Update**Multi-vehicle crash Interstate 5 with extended closure- Linn County (Photo)10/21/22

The Oregon State Police is releasing additional information related to the multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 on October 19, 2022. 

  • Initial estimates of involved vehicles have not changed. Total numbers of involved vehicles may not ever be fully known. Upon dropping the cable barrier to allow first responders ingress/egress, many drivable vehicles within the crash zone drove over the barrier and left the scene. 
  • 4 subjects were transported to area hospitals, one in serious condition. 
  • The name of the single fatality is being released:  Phillip Frye (29) of Portland.

On October 19, 2022, around 8:00 A.M., Oregon State Police Troopers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 between milepost 228 and 211. 

Interstate 5 southbound is completely blocked with a detour in place. Interstate 5 northbound is open but moving slowly. The freeway is expected to be closed most of the day. Preliminary estimates of involved vehicles are 15 to 20 Commercial Motor Vehicles and 45 passenger vehicles with one confirmed fatality. 

The Oregon Department of Transportation has temporarily dropped the cable barrier to detour vehicles caught in the gridlock on Interstate 5.  School buses from Eugene have also arrived on the scene to assist in relocating 30-40 stranded motorists to Pioneer Villa at exit 216. 

DEQ and HAZMAT are responding to approximately 6 of the CMVs that are leaking fluids onto the roadway. 

Several public safety agencies are assisting. Members of the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are on the scene.

Fatal Crash on Interstate 5-Linn County10/20/22

On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at approximately 2:10 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 southbound near milepost 219. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a Freightliner CMV, operated by Pritpal Singh (31) of Sacramento, CA, was stopped in the slow lane due to an earlier crash.  A second Freightliner, operated by Kirpal Singh (63) of Yuba City, CA, collided with the stopped CMV and caught fire. This caused a chain reaction rear-ending of a Nissan Armada, operated by Patricia Foster (36) of Central Point, and a Ford Focus, operated by Kevin Loomis (55) of Norway, Michigan. 

Kirpal Singh sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Pritpal Singh, Patricia Foster and Kevin Loomis were uninjured. Pritpal Singh and Kirpal Singh are not related.

Interstate 5 was closed for approximately 8 hours while the OSP Troopers and OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene. This was the second chain reaction crash on a 10 mile stretch of Interstate 5 within 6 hours.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 211-Clackamas County10/19/22

On Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at approximately 8:45 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle crash on Hwy 211 near milepost 9. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound white BMW X5, operated by Francisco Torres (22) of Modesto, CA, left its lane of travel, exited the road on the northbound shoulder and struck a tree. Investigators located approximately 20 lbs. of packaged marijuana in and around the vehicle. In addition, Torres displayed signs of impairment.

The rear passenger, Hubert Armaspena (28) of Modesto, CA, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The front right passenger in the vehicle, Jesus Farias-Alvarez (22) of Modesto, sustained critical injuries and was transported via Life Flight to Salem Hospital. Torres was injured and transported to OHSU prior to being arrested and lodged at the Clackamas County Jail on charges of DUII and Negligent Homicide. 

Hwy 211 was affected for approximately 5 hours while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene. 

OSP was assisted by Molalla Fire Department, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and ODOT. 

Fatal Crash on Hwy 20-Malheur County10/19/22

On Sunday, October 16, 2022 at approximately 9:49 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Hwy 20 near milepost 254. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a westbound Ford Aerostar, operated by Florentinus Micheli (42) of Nyssa, struck a pedestrian, identified as Cory Easom (52) of Ontario, who was in the westbound lane at the time of the collision. It is not known why Easom was in the roadway. 

Easom sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Micheli sustained non-life-threatening injuries.  

OSP was assisted by Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Vale Fire and EMS, Treasure Valley Paramedics and ODOT. 

Fatal Crash on Hwy 26-Clackamas County10/19/22

On Monday, October 17, 2022 at approximately 11:20 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Hwy 26 near milepost 32. 

Preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound white Volvo commercial motor vehicle, operated by Edgar Clark Jr. (62) of Troutdale, struck a pedestrian, identified as Herman Neal IV (32) of Welches, who was in the eastbound lane. It is not known why Neal was in the roadway. 

Neal IV sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. 

Hwy 26 was affected for approximately 4 hours while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene.

OSP Fish & Wildlife Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for shooting and killing a wolf -Lookout Mountain Wildlife Management Unit, Baker County (Photo)10/18/22

On October 3, 2022, Fish and Wildlife Troopers received information from ODFW that a collared wolf, OR88, may be deceased at a location near Little Lookout Mountain, approximately nine miles northeast of Durkee, OR.

Fish and Wildlife Troopers and ODFW personnel responded to the area and located a deceased wolf on the Bureau of Land Management Property.  The wolf had injuries consistent with having been shot by a firearm.  The adult wolf, known as OR88 was a black female wolf that was part of the Lookout Mountain Pack.  Troopers believe the wolf was shot at this location on October 2, 2022.   

The Oregon Wildlife Coalition and conservation partners are offering to pay an $11,500 reward that leads OSP F&W Troopers to an arrest and/or citation stemming from this incident.

Fatal Crash on I-84-Malheur County10/18/22

On Saturday, October 15, 2022 at approximately 11:13 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 near milepost 378. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a westbound black Freightliner towing a flatbed trailer, operated by Akbar Tanai (32) of San Antonio, TX, was rear-ended by a blue Jeep Liberty, operated by Eric Torres Santana (29) of Caldwell, ID, as they traveled in the slow lane. After the initial collision the Freightliner pulled to the right shoulder and the Jeep came to rest within the fast lane. A black Honda Fit, operated by Tracy Haws (48) of Nampa, ID, was traveling in the westbound fast lane and subsequently struck the Jeep Liberty. 

Eric Torres Santana and his passenger, Noel Alejandro Santana Dominguez (20) of Caldwell, ID, were ejected from the Jeep. Torres Santana sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Santana Dominguez was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased. Haws received critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Tanai was uninjured. 

I-84 was affected for approximately 4 hours while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene.  

OSP was assisted by Ontario Police Department, Ontario Fire Department, Treasure Valley Paramedics and ODOT. In addition, multiple good Samaritans assisted on the scene and OSP would like to thank them for their efforts. 

Fatal Crash on Hwy 26-Wasco County10/17/22

On Saturday, October 15, 2022 at approximately 1:31 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 26 near milepost 77. 

Preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound white Ford Taurus, operated by James Mahon (51) of Mineral Wells, TX, left its lane of travel and collided head-on with a westbound blue Hyundai Ion, operated by Carla Nichols (63) of Redmond. 

Mahon and Nichols both sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased. A canine, a young Chihuahua, in Nichols vehicle survived the crash and was cared for by passerby’s. 

Hwy 26 was affected for approximately 5 hours while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene. 

OSP was assisted by Warm Springs Police Department and ODOT.

Oregon State Police seize nearly 9,000 pounds of processed marijuana in traffic stop- Jackson County (Photo)10/17/22

On Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at approximately 3:00 P.M., an Oregon State Police Trooper assigned to the Central Point Area Command stopped a white Dodge truck out of Texas, pulling a large cargo trailer, for several traffic violations on State Route 62 in Eagle Point, Oregon. 

During the stop, reasonable suspicion was developed for the exportation of marijuana. A consent search of the cargo trailer revealed approximately 350 garbage bags containing dried, processed marijuana with a total weight of 8,850 pounds. 

The driver, identified as MANUEL RODRIGUEZ PLASCENCIA (30) from Turlock, California, was issued criminal citations and released. 

OSP Troopers were assisted during the investigation by the OSP Southwest Region (SWR) Drug Enforcement Section (DES) team and the Interagency Marijuana Enforcement Team (IMET) of the Medford Police Department and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Troopers are seeking public assistance identifying the person(s) involved in an Elk Poaching- Curry County (Photo)10/14/22

On October 7, 2022, OSP dispatch received a report of an Elk carcass found in the area of “Big Bend” Illahe, Oregon.    Troopers arrived on the scene of a 6×5 bull elk that was shot and left to waste. 

An investigation determined the Elk was killed sometime between October 5, 2022, 5:45 P.M. and October 6, 2022, 8:00 A.M.

OSP is urging anyone with information about the identity of the person (s) or vehicle in the area of “Big Bend” in Illahe, Oregon to call the OSP tip line at 1-800-452-7888, *OSP (*677), or email at TIP@osp.oregon.gov. Please reference case number SP22270502.

Fatal Crash on Hwy 97-Klamath County10/14/22

On Thursday, October 13, 2022 at approximately 2:35 AM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 97 near milepost 235. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound silver Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Eric Johnson (64) of Coos Bay, crossed over into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a white Freightliner, operated by Benjamin Rohner (48) of Warrenton.

Johnson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Rohner sustained minor injuries. 

Hwy 97 was affected for approximately 3 hours while the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the scene. 

OSP was assisted by Chiloquin Fire and Rescue and ODOT.
