Eugene, OR.  At just after 4:00 a.m. on June 2nd, Central Lane Communications received a call for smoke and flames in the area of JH Baxter and the railroad tracks. EPD responded was able to access from Seneca Rd.  Officers found a homeless encampment with a large fire from a debris and rubbish pile just south of the tracks. Due to the difficult access, ESF responded with one fire engine, a brush engine and a battalion chief. Crews deployed hundreds of feet of hose down the tracks to access and extinguish the fire. Fire and EMS response to incidents along the railroad tracks are time and resource intensive due to access and safety issues. Thanks to EPD for their quick response, identifying the main access point, and staying on scene for safety.
