At 7 p.m. on September 5, a sergeant working the “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt grant attempted to stop the driver of a Honda Accord for a seatbelt violation. Instead, the driver ran a red light at Valley River Drive and Willagillespie Road, then got out and fled on foot behind the apartments at 1011 Abbie Lane. The passenger remained in the car and was cooperative.

The suspect was discovered fleeing into his apartment. All other occupants of the apartment exited, except for the suspect, Sean Lee Wayne Wilkins, age 37, of Eugene.

For two hours Wilkins refused to exit the apartment. A Eugene Police officer wrote and applied for a search warrant, which was granted by a local judge. Eugene Police Patrol, SWAT command, Street Crimes Unit, Drone Team, and K9 team assisted in serving the search warrant and Wilkins ultimately came out after lengthy work by a Crisis Negotiation Team officer.

Wilkins was arrested without incident and transported to Lane County Jail on the following charges: Elude (vehicle), Elude (foot), Interfering w/Police, Reckless Driving, an Oregon State Parole Board warrant, and Fugitive from Justice related to a Nevada warrant. Case 22-13447

The Eugene Police Department’s participation in the ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign is to remind drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt and proper child safety restraints. This is a U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s national campaign.
