At 3:19 p.m. on May 17, Eugene Police responded to a reported of an armed man at the Big Y Liquor Store, 2166 W. 6th Avenue. Callers had reported a man later identified as 23-year-old Juan Francisco Tomas Hernandez attempted to steal alcohol and employees observed a handgun in his pocket when they were intervening to prevent that. Hernandez left the store and then walked back in and began yelling. He exited and entered the store a couple of times, appearing aggressive. 

Hernandez left and ran westbound, then ended up next door at Coastal Farm, where he selected and concealed several other items, including clothing and tools. Coastal employees directed three responding officers toward Hernandez and the officers took him into custody. Hernandez had his firearm in his waistband at the time of arrest.

Hernandez was transported to Lane County Jail on charges including Menacing, Theft in the Third Degree, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Trespass with a Firearm.
