At 10:59 p.m. on April 25, Eugene Police officers were enroute to a call when they observed a reckless driver at Four Corners speeding and hitting the center median. When they attempted to stop the driver of the vehicle, a Ford Mustang, he sped up and eluded them. No pursuit was initiated. However, the suspect vehicle turned west onto Pattison and an officer quickly located it at Pattison and Waite with no one inside. Other officers arrived in the area and a few seconds later a man, later identified as Alejandro J. Ayala, age 21, appeared from a yard nearby, but claimed he was not the driver. He appeared intoxicated and was detained for an investigation.

While an officer was with Ayala, a Springfield Police K9 team responded and tracked from the Mustang, into the yard nearby and back to the car, where Ayala was located. The vehicle was not registered to Ayala, but after contacting the registered owner, officers found Ayala had purchased the vehicle a week prior.  It was determined Ayala was the Mustang’s owner.

After further investigation, Ayala was transported to Lane County Jail on charges of DUII, Driving While Suspended, Elude by Foot, and Reckless Driving. He received citations for violation of ignition interlock device and refusing a breath test. Case 23-05982
