HEPPNER — Morrow and Umatilla counties are working on an application for $1.7 million of federal grant money to continue researching short- and long-term solutions to nitrate contamination in area wells.

The funds were secured by Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden in July 2022 from the fiscal year 2023 Senate appropriations bill. The money is being administered through the Environmental Protection Agency as a research and technology grant.
