LA GRANDE — Tom Strandberg’s days of answering 3 a.m. phone calls are ending, but his days of answering the call of the open road are about to rev up.

Strandberg, the Oregon Department of Transportation’s public information officer for much of Eastern Oregon the past two decades, will retire this fall. His departure means he no will longer be responsible for getting the word out to the public at all hours about emergency road closures on Interstate 84 and state highways, road reopenings, posting drone photos on ODOT’s Trip Check website to illustrate hazardous driving conditions or writing news releases about new I-84 safety features his agency has added.
