NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:
On March 20, 2023 at 1346 hours, the Springfield Police Department received a report of a robbery involving a firearm at Winco at 1920 Olympic Street. A store employee confronted a theft suspect who was initially cooperative. The suspect returned to the store with employees but then produced a handgun and menaced employees before departing from the store on foot, with the stolen property. The employee provided a detailed description of the suspect and a last known direction of travel.

All available SPD officers responded and began searching the area within minutes. An alert officer located a person matching the suspect description in a nearby shopping center parking lot. The subject was detained and identified as Daniel Woodward, and the store employee was transported to the stop location. The employee positively identified Woodward as the robbery suspect. The suspect had discarded his jacket prior to police contact and it was found hidden a short distance away.

Officers also located a realistic airsoft gun less than fifty feet from where the suspect was contacted by officers, which was the weapon that the subject used to threaten employees. The suspect was arrested on several outstanding warrants and multiple probable cause charges related to the incident at the store.
