PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING AND HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS OF THE LAKE WHERE BLOOMS ARE, AS THE MAJOR RISK OF EXPOSURE IS FROM INGESTING WATER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

  • An Upper level Low Pressure Trough (“U” shape) brings in northwest airflow. The graphics for days 1-3 show the complex frontal system that will move through California. The graphics for days 3-7  Sunday through Thursday show High Pressure taking over until a  frontal system approaches next Thursday.
  • NOTE: I measured 1.21 inches of rain in my rain gauge for Wednesday 11/30.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Mostly cloudy with a good (50%) chance of evening rain and snow showers, a slight (20%) chance of snow showers late tonight (0.10 in. of rain possible, little or no snow accumulation expected, snow level 500 ft.),
  • Mostly cloudy with slight (20%) chance of rain and a bit warmer Friday afternoon (under 0.10 in. of rain possible, no snow accumulation expected, snow level 1,500 ft.), cloudy with a good (50%) chance of evening showers, a slight (20%) chance of rain and snow showers late Friday night (under 0.10 in. of rain possible, snow level 1,500 ft.),
