HEALTH ADVISORIES

  • NOTE A CHANGE: A RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF UPPER KLAMATH LAKE IN KLAMATH COUNTY INCLUDING SHOALWATER BAY DUE THE PRESENCE OF A CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOM AND CYANOTOXINS ABOVE RECREATIONAL USE VALUES FOR HUMAN EXPOSURE. PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING AND HIGH-SPEED WATER ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WATER SKIING OR POWER BOATING, IN AREAS OF THE LAKE WHERE BLOOMS ARE, AS THE MAJOR RISK OF EXPOSURE IS FROM INGESTING WATER. THESE TOXINS ARE NOT ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE SKIN SENSITIVITIES  YOU MAY GET A PUFFY RED RASH. IT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SPECIAL CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY THE YOUNGER ONES, WHEN THEY ARE NEAR THE WATER.
  • A RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY FOR CRONE MILLER IN BENTON COUNTY DUE THE PRESENCE OF A CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOM AND CYANOTOXINS ABOVE RECREATIONAL USE VALUES FOR HUMAN EXPOSURE HAS BEEN LIFTED. NOTE: OREGON HEALTH AUTHORITY ADVISES DOG OWNERS TO CONTINUALLY BE ALERT TO SIGNS OF CYANOBACTERIA BLOOMS, OR AREAS OF THE LAKE THAT LOOK SUSPICIOUS. BLOOMS CAN DEVELOP AND DISAPPEAR ON ANY BODY OF WATER AT ANY TIME, EVEN IN THE FALL AND WINTER IF CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE. ONLY A FRACTION OF WATER BODIES IN OREGON ARE MONITORED FOR CYANOBACTERIA, BLOOMS AND TOXINS DURING THE RECREATION SEASON, AND NO MONITORING OR SAMPLING IS PERFORMED ONCE RECREATION SEASON HAS ENDED. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH SIGNS OF BLOOM, EXPOSURES, AND SYMPTOMS BY VISITING OHA’S CYANOBACTERIA HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM WEBSITE AT:  http://www.healthoregon.org/hab.
  • A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.
