HEALTH ADVISORIES

A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (“U “shape) is slowly moving southward over the Pacific Northwest. The graphics for days 1-3 show the frontal activity approaching Oregon.  The graphics for days 3-7 show more complex frontal activity moving our way Thursday through next Monday giving us chances of getting wet.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Mostly cloudy with AM rain and snow (snow level 500 ft.), showers with a slight (20%) chance of thunderstorms and a bit cooler this afternoon (0.25 in. of rain possible, 1 in. of snow possible), late evening rain and snow showers with a slight (20%) chance of thunderstorms, rain and snow showers late tonight (0.25 in. of rain possible, 0.50 in. of snow possible, snow level 1,000 ft. falling to 500 ft. late at night),
  • Mostly cloudy with rain and snow showers Tuesday (1 in. of snow possible, snow level 500 ft. rising to 1,000 ft. in the afternoon), a good (50%) chance of Wednesday, partly cloudy in the evening, then mostly cloudy with a slight (20%) of rain and snow late Wednesday night (snow level 500 ft. late at night).
