HEALTH ADVISORIES

A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

  • The Upper Level Airflow is sending moisture west to east straight into the Pacific Northwest. The graphics for days 1-3 show the next frontal system headed our way Sunday and Monday.  The graphics for days 3-7 show more complex frontal systems moving our way Tuesday through next Saturday giving us more chances of getting wet.
  • NOTE: Daylight Saving Time officially begins a 2 am Sunday (tomorrow), so remember to set your clocks ahead one hour at bedtime tonight. (Spring Forward). The authorities also remind you to check your Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide Detector, and Radon detector to make sure they are working properly. Replace batteries if necessary. As the old saying goes “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
