HEALTH ADVISORIES

A PERMANENT RECREATIONAL HEALTH ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER AND MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER. THE ADVISORY COVERS THE SOUTH UMPQUA RIVER FROM CANYONVILLE DOWNSTREAM TO THE CONFLUENCE OF THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER, AND THE MAINSTEM UMPQUA RIVER DOWNSTREAM PAST ELKTON TO LAWSON BAR. PEOPLE IN THE BEDROCK ALONG THE RIVERS EDGE ARE ARE KNOWN TO DEVELOP CYANOBACTERIA (BLUE-GREEN ALGAE) BLOOMS THAT CAN BE HARMFUL TO PETS AND PEOPLE IF ACCIDENTAL INGESTION OCCURS. SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED AT SEVERAL ACCESS AREAS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE WEATHER PATTERN

An Upper Level Low Pressure Trough (“U” shape) is approaching the Pacific Northwest and the Atmospheric River remains well to the south moving over central and southern California. The graphics for days 1-3 show a frontal system moving our way Thursday. The graphics for days 3-7 show an increase in complex frontal systems moving our way Sunday through next Thursday continuing the rain chances.

Forecast for the South Willamette Valley including Eugene-Springfield:

  • Increasing clouds with a good (50%) chance of evening showers and a slight (20%) chance of thunderstorms (small hail possible), a good (50%) chance of showers late tonight (under 0.10 in. of rain possible, more in storms),
  • Mostly cloudy with showers and cooler Thursday with a slight (20%) chance of afternoon thunderstorms (0.25 in. of rain possible, more in storms, small hail possible), showers with a slight (20%) chance of thunderstorms Thursday night, snow showers late at night (0.25 in. of rain possible, snow level 1,000 ft., small hail possible),
