HERMISTON — Students looking for hands-on experience with firefighting professionals while continuing their educations are encouraged to get involved with the Umatilla County Fire District No. 1’s Resident Intern Program.

Fire Chief Scott Stanton said each year the five-week series, launched in 1997, offers 12 positions for new or returning interns attending paramedic school or college and working toward degrees in fire science, emergency medicine and registered nursing, among others.
