UPDATE:

The suspect’s name is being withheld so family can be contacted and provided information.

During the evening of November 6, Eugene Police and University of Oregon Police were notified of a person in the Eugene area who had been making threatening phone calls to local organizations.  On November 7, a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Deschutes County Circuit Court for failure to appear in an unrelated assault case. Shortly after the warrant was issued, his vehicle was located by a University of Oregon Police officer near campus.  It was believed the suspect was armed. Due to the potential threat to the community, SWAT and other EPD teams were deployed to take the suspect into custody on his warrant. EPD attempted to stop him with the assistance of SWAT, on West 11th Avenue and Garfield Street.  The suspect eluded the wrong way on W. 11th Avenue for about a block.  His vehicle came to a stop at West 11th Avenue and Hayes Street and he was found deceased inside his vehicle of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  

PREVIOUS INFORMATION:

Shortly before 11 a.m. today, November 7, a high-risk suspect wanted out of another jurisdiction was spotted in Eugene. Police units responded, along with EPD SWAT, which was in the area on an unrelated call-out and was diverted to the call. Units got behind the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop at W. 11th and Garfield. The suspect fled about two blocks before shooting himself as officers closed in.  The suspect was found deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

No officers were involved with the shots fired. Eugene Police is conducting a death investigation. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending family notifications.
