At 10:44 a.m. on January 25, a member of the Eugene Police Traffic Safety Unit was monitoring Beltline near Northwest Expressway, when he spotted a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling at a high rate of speed going westbound. He was operating lidar at the time and obtained a speed measurement of 110 m.p.h. The officer activated the emergency lights on his motorcycle and noted the Hyundai took the Prairie Road exit. He caught up to the Hyundai, which had turned and was going southbound on Prairie Road. The officer briefly activated his siren to clear the intersection and ensure the driver of the Santa Fe was aware of his efforts to stop her. Another vehicle (otherwise unrelated to this incident) was going to pull into the east driveway access to Lane Forest Products` truck shop, located on Prairie Road, immediately south of the Beltline overpass. The Santa Fe passed this other vehicle, then abruptly cut in front of the other vehicle to get into the same driveway, nearly causing a collision.

The Santa Fe stopped in the driveway. The driver, identified later as Kayla Deniese Nice, age 34, of Springfield, opened the driver`s door and began to exit the vehicle. The officer directed her to remain in the vehicle and she was compliant then and throughout the contact. After initial contact, the officer detected possible intoxication. After an investigation, Nice was found to be driving while intoxicated.

Nice was arrested for DUII, Violating Designated Speed, and Driving Uninsured.
